Review of Fierce by Clarissa Wild

Synopsis: Fight for your dreams. Fight for your life. Fight for love.

Nerdy girl Autumn Blakewood is the prime example of a goody two-shoes. She studies every night, is never late for class, and always follows the rules. She has never felt the need to step out of her comfort zone. That is, until she meets Hunter.

Hunter Bane is a cocky, confident bad-boy, who's nothing but trouble. He’s a dangerous distraction to everyone around him. Sexy and strong, Hunter enjoys the swooning effect he has on women. Especially those who aren't used to attention, like Autumn.

Autumn finds it hard not to give into Hunter’s advances, even though it all seems like a game to him. Trying to understand him is impossible, because he shrouds himself in mystery.

What she doesn't know is that Hunter has more baggage than anyone should have to carry. When she discovers he's in an illegal frat club to save the one person that matters to him, Autumn realizes this could mean the end of her undeniable connection to him. Even their lives are at risk. But it's too late to turn back now ...

3.5 Stars

Review:
I really wish that I could give this book more stars, because I like the basic story involved, but there were a few things that took away from my enjoyment of the book or distracted me as I was reading.

First, we have Autumn, whom Hunter cutely refers to as 'Leafy', due to her having leaves stuck in her hair when he meets her. Super cute, right? She also refers to her hair as basically being Velcro, which I thought was very humorous. Autumn is supposedly this really nerdy girl, however, that was picked on in high school. She or her friend, Evie, mention that many times. She doesn't really act like someone who was picked on, though. She acts like someone who is shy and doesn't have a lot of friends, but she doesn't have some of the emotional or mental damage that bullying leaves with someone. She also talks about being a virgin, but she has some really dirty talk going on in her head, which seems inconsistent with her character.

Hunter did not disappoint, based on the teasers and the cover. He was known around campus (apparently from day one, which was another inconsistency) to be this bad boy, and as Autumn gets to know him, she finds out more about why he acts the way that he does. Some of his story line was a little too hard to believe, but many of his actions sounded about right for a testosterone filled 18 or 19 year old boy that has to make some tough decisions.

The other area that kept not sitting right with me was Autumn's two friends Evie and Brody. Brody is three years older and has been in college for several years, and Autumn and Evie are coming in as Freshman. Evie seemed all over the place and would seem to be Autumn's best friend one minute and then going off on someone and yelling at them the next. I couldn't connect with her. Brody, on the other hand, kept being referred to as though he and Autumn were the best of friends, but he wasn't acting right or treating her very well. All of this was just kind of talked about, though, so you didn't get to see it happening. You find out why Brody is acting so weird, but I feel like the inconsistencies with the characters, somewhat with the timeline and the hard to believe actions all came together for the story to not end up being as good as I wanted it to.

One of the reasons I never wrote a lot of reviews prior to this was because I didn't want to give negative feedback when I didn't like a book. I think it must be very difficult to write something and put a piece of yourself out there, so I give Clarissa mad props for the idea of the story and for a majorly hot Hunter! I think the story and the characters could be made more consistent, and maybe even have some details added to it, and it would come across much better.
