Review of Fighting for Love (Second Chances #4) by L.P. Dover

Synopsis: Fighting for someone’s heart is more challenging than fighting for a title.

For a time, many years ago, love had grown, love was made, and in the end … love was lost. The decision to leave had been the worst mistake Shelby Dawson could have ever made. However, at the time—ten years ago—she felt her secret needed to stay hidden, even if it broke her heart and the heart of the man she loved. Back then, he was all hers and she was all his, but now things have changed and he isn’t the same guy she knew.

He happens to be the well-known MMA Heavyweight champion and famous bad boy, Matt ‘The Destroyer’ Reynolds, who once before struggled to help his family pay the bills. Now, he has money flowing with each undefeated win and an insurmountable number of women filling his bed. Everything is perfect for the illustrious fighter, until one day it all changes. In walks the girl from his past, the same girl who promised to stick by him but left and never looked back.

Their second chance to make things right will not come easy, for when one mistake is made an unwelcome consequence soon follows. Someone out there wants to rip them apart and they won’t stop until Matt and Shelby pay the ultimate price … their love.

4.5 Stars!

Review: This book is the fourth in a series, but it can be read as a stand alone. I had not read the previous three books. I really enjoyed this story because, as frustrating as it was to read, it really seems to be a representation of the decisions that we can make at a young age, or during an emotional time. We meet Shelby in the past at the beginning of the book, and I was pretty sure I knew what she was going through, although the book did not come out and clearly state it at that point. We just find out that she is experiencing a major loss, and she has also recently left Matt, because she felt that it would be better for him.

Fast forward to the present and Shelby is a successful writer for a sports magazine, although she writes under a pen name. Matt has become a successful MMA fighter, and he has been chosen for the next big spread that Shelby's magazine is doing. They have the surprising run-in and when Shelby tries to run, again, Matt finally chases after her. I say "finally" because this is the type of story that you really feel the angst for both of them and wish that they had just made different decisions when they were younger - but then we wouldn't have the story.

Matt and Shelby definitely have a lot of chemistry, and it is one of those relationships where they really pick up as though they have been dating this whole time. They both seem to realize that the feelings are still there and just as strong as they ever were. They have to fight through the past decisions they made, however - Shelby's leaving Matt and Matt turning to lots of other women to try to move on. Not everyone wants these two to be happy, however. Matt has a pretty big enemy, who also happens to be a little psychotic, by the way, and he is out for Matt's blood. Someone in Shelby's life also plays a part in the plot against Matt, however, and I will say that that was a little surprising.

There are a few other hurdles that these two will have to overcome before they can really figure out if they can be together. I love a good second chance story, and this one is definitely up there. I will have to say that I think that everyone was a little too forgiving of a certain female in the book, which seems unrealistic. I also felt like Jace, one of Shelby's best friends, made a huge decision in the book that came out of nowhere. So, that seemed a little abrupt. I don't want to say a lot about these last two things because they would be spoilers, but this is definitely a hot MMA book, and a great second chance love story!

Review of Phenomenal X (Hard Knocks #1) by Michelle A. Valentine

Synopsis: Good Girl. Notorious Bad-Boy. One Phenomenal Love.
From the mean streets of Detroit rises the newest superstar of professional wrestling, Xavier Cold, better known as Phenomenal X. His muscular physique makes men cower before him and women lose their minds with desire.

Anna Cortez is fresh out of college and naive to the harsh realities of the real world. Tired of living under the thumb of her conservative family, she defies them when she accepts a job as the assistant to wrestling’s most notorious bad-boy. Phenomenal X has an animalistic nature that even good girl Anna finds hard to resist.

One night forced to share a bed in a sold-out hotel, lines blur between them and they quickly learn that one lustful night changes everything and neither one of them will ever be the same.

4.5 Stars

Review: I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Anna, the good girl trying to escape her overbearing family and find her own way in life, and Xavier, the bad boy boxer who has fought and clawed his way up from a horrible childhood. Just be aware that this book definitely has a cliffhanger, which I did not realize, as I kind of snapped it up without reading any reviews. I've read a lot of Michele's Rocker books - and LOVED them - so I jumped in.

The story begins when Anna catches Xavier's eye on the plane, as she is leaving Oregon and heading to Detroit. After a little mishap, she is able to sit next to him, and he makes the most of his time and flirts with her. Xavier, who is originally from Detroit, but only visiting for a week, continues pursuing Anna's "friendship", though they both definitely have feelings for one another. Xavier offers Anna a job, which she accepts, as his personal assistant, and Anna travels to Atlanta for a fight.

Atlanta provides a lot of upheaval for these two, as they both have to face some of their past. Then, the story ends as something pretty major happens. I won't provide spoilers on that, but this book will definitely turn the heat up, and it may make you want to throw your kindle on the last page, too. Enjoy!

Review of The Unraveling of Raven by Theresa Sederholt

This beautiful girl with the violet eyes has left Jax, who never gets rattled, totally speechless. He has always gotten whatever he wanted. So, why was this beautiful girl running away from him? As time goes on, he slowly unravels the many layers of Raven, but what he finds puts everyone around them in danger.

Can anyone survive?

3.5 Stars

Review: This story has some promise, but I had a difficult time starting it, for several reasons. There are some slang phrases that are misused, as well as some pretty major grammatical issues - periods being used instead of commas, and vice versa being just an example. The point of view also switches back and forth, with no warning, not just from chapter to chapter, but paragraph to paragraph, and it's very confusing. Once you get past the initial errors and the confusing point of view changes, the basic story is good, but I do think that I had a hard time connecting to the characters due to my initial difficult with the grammatical errors.

Raven runs into Jax, literally runs into him, while leaving a coffee shop one day. He, a known playboy, is intrigued by this girl with beautiful violet eyes that then runs away from him. He takes the time to find out that she comes back to this coffee shop every day. Later that day, he fills in for his brother in law and goes to a Bring Your Parents event at his nephew's school, and Raven is actually the teacher. After that, he continues to track her down and gets her to go on a date with him. I liked his persistence! Things with their relationship escalate pretty quickly at that point, and, suddenly, several members of Jax's family begin to get threats, including Raven. Raven and Jax have some major chemistry, although, I did struggle with her being so hesitant about being physical with Jax to suddenly kind of jumping into doing some pretty major things, physically, with him - and without much discussion.

As the story unfolds, Raven begins to share more about her history, and she actually has some pretty dangerous ties within her background. Everyone around them seems to be turning on them, and you begin to question who Raven and Jax can actually trust. Then, Raven is taken, all while finding out some dark secrets about her past that even she did not know. Jax and his best friend/security guard, Max, must look at the big picture and figure out some of these things in order to help Raven. This is where I had to kind of suspend my disbelief, however, because, not only do they find out where she is, they get the information quickly and are all of a sudden experts at how to drive a massive speed boat, hang-glide and base-jump down a cliff, which are some examples of things that I would be reading and think "where did this come from?".

I will say this, however - the story moves quickly, and there is definitely suspense that keeps you guessing a little. Little details comes out in the final part of the book that you don't see coming until right before it happens. I like when I haven't figured out the whole plot of a book within the first few chapters, so that's why I feel like this has a good basic story.

*Update: I have been notified that updates have been made to correct grammatical errors and to highlight the point of view switches which were so confusing for me, while reading.

Review of Wild (Dark Riders MC #1) by Elsa Day

Wild (Dark Riders Motorcycle Club #1)
Synopsis: Which will she choose? Love, or safety?

Lilly Clarkfeld just wants to be a regular college student. In her dreams she is a nurse, has a family, and is safe. That's not much to ask.

But when she's forced to return to her childhood home because of her mother's illness, everything changes.

Lilly's car crashes and she's taken in the night by the Dark Riders. It could have been any motorcycle club, but it was his.

Lilly's first love.

Asher Thomas is bigger, stronger, and more damaged than Lilly remembers, but he never forgot about her.

They still burn for each other, but is this the life for Lilly? Can she put her white picket fence dreams on hold and trade them in for the rough love of an outlaw biker?

Wild is the first entry in the Dark Riders Motorcycle Club serial, following the story of Lilly and Asher. The series contains strong sexual themes, and is not intended for readers under the age of 18

2.5 Stars

Review: I was kind of in the mood for an MC book the other day, and this one came through on Amazon for free, so I went ahead and got it and started it. The story begins with Lilly packing her clothes to go home to see her mom, who mailed her a card, that also happened to have her untreatable cancer diagnosis in it. It wasn't a phone call where her mom and she were both emotional and tearful - it was a card. Based on the relationship that she seems to have with her mom, that seems like a really unrealistic way to share that information. Lilly decides to leave college and drive to her mother's house, however, to be with her mom. She wrecks her car on the way, and ends up getting picked up by a man who is part of a motorcycle group. He grabs her and puts her on the bike behind him and they just ride for hours. They do stop at one point, and she witnesses the man that she is riding with getting into a fight with another guy. Never at any point does she say a word of protest or ask anything like "what are you going to do with me". Nothing. This also seems a little unrealistic to me.

At some point that night, Lilly falls asleep on the back of this bike, and wakes up as they are pulling up to her childhood home, where her mom apparently still lives. I slowly began to pick up on the fact that Lilly's parents were not still married - that wasn't really made clear at first. At this point, Lilly runs up to her mother and slams the door. Her mother then informs her that the man that had brought her home was her childhood friend, Asher. Over the next several days, Lilly and Asher get reacquainted, and she tries to decide if she wants to be with him, which also means being part of his MC.

This is a very quick read, and the story moves very quickly, but not necessarily in a good way. It's like all of the depth to make the story believable is just completely missing, which is sad, because the basic storyline is still very interesting to me. I would re-read this if it was ever re-written and had a lot of details added to it. This does end on a major cliffhanger, too, so be aware of that.

Review of Fall into Forever by Beth Hyland

Fall into ForeverSynopsis: A girl with a past she can't remember. A guy with a past he can't forget.

Ivy McAllister had it all. Perfect boyfriend. Perfect life. Perfect future. Or so they tell her. Because one night, on a dark country road, a fiery crash changed everything…and Ivy can’t remember what happened.

Now, two years later, at a new college far from home, she tries to regain control of her life, but her plans don’t include a tattooed, motorcycle-riding, indie music-obsessed guy with his own sorority girl fan club.

Jon Priestly is the hottest guy at Pacific State University. Just ask his groupies. But with a dark past he must keep hidden, he shuts himself off emotionally and trusts no one. That is…until he meets a broken girl with haunting green eyes and secrets of her own.

Ivy shouldn’t be attracted to Jon. They’re wrong for each other in every possible way. Yet as they spend time together, something about him—everything about him—feels so right.
But when threats from her past make her question what little she does remember, Ivy must decide whether to run again or trust the one person she can’t live without.

*** Due to mature situations, strong language and drug references, this is not intended for readers under 18. ***
4 Stars

Review: I really enjoyed Ivy and Jon's story. You start off with Ivy, who is stranded in a bathroom, at a party, after seeing someone from her past that she does not want to see. You really don't get a good idea, yet, of why she does not want to see him, but she is clearly freaking out and needs to get away. From there, the story moves back to earlier in the evening when Ivy and her friend, Cassidy, are waiting to get into the party. This is when Ivy meets Jon for the first time, when he escorts someone out of the party and gets into a fight. Ivy makes a first impression of Jon that includes him being the MMA fighter/druggie type, so she does not really consider wanting to get to know him. He comes in later in the evening, however, and helps her out.

The two end up having a class together, and slowly, over the course of several weeks, they start seeing on another. There are a few starts and stops due to both of them freaking out a little bit, but they clearly have a great flirtation and chemistry going on. Then, after some violence on campus, Jon finally recognizes that he cares for Ivy, so he finally mans up and they start dating. From there, the story is about both of them learning to come to terms with their past and being able to be together. I liked that this story moved back and forth between both of their points of view because you see how both of them are strong individuals that are trying to overcome some pretty difficult things. Jon's story, is especially heartbreaking, but Ivy has also dealt with a lot of abuse and bullying.

I felt like Ivy's story was a little choppy, for lack of a better word. I think that there could be more depth to what she went through, especially what she did remember of it. It also seemed to wrap up too quickly, and I felt like I missed some depth towards the end of the book that was definitely there earlier in the book. Also, Jon's story didn't feel resolved to me. I'm not sure at this point if there will be a second book that will go into that more, but he was just as much a focus of the story, for me, and I felt like I was left hanging with his part of the story. Otherwise, this story was a good college age story, and there was definitely some heat involved!

Review of Nothing Left to Lose by Kirsty Moseley

Synopsis: Annabelle Spencer’s life is every girl’s dream. She has wonderful parents, great friends, and of course the perfect boyfriend, Jack Roberts. That all changes on her sixteenth birthday when her life comes crashing down around her. Her dream night turns into a nightmare when Jack is murdered right in front of her, and she’s kidnapped by his murderer, Carter Thomas, a big time drug and arms dealer.

After five months of being with Carter, she’s found, but the experience has totally changed her. She’s no longer the happy-go-lucky girl that everyone used to know and love; she’s now cold, hard and suffers from night terrors. It appears that Carter broke not only her body, but her spirit too. A shadow of her former self, her slogan for life is now: ‘If you don’t care about anything, then you have nothing to lose’.

Carter is currently serving time for the murder of Jack, a conviction that Anna helped secure. But his retrial is coming up because some key evidence appears to have been tampered with. Unbeknown to Anna, death threats are being received by her father, the Senator. It appears that Carter is still interested in Anna and will stop at nothing to get her back.

Ashton Taylor is brought in to protect her. He’s a newly qualified SWAT agent, a bright spark, the agency’s new golden boy. He is assigned undercover, posing as her boyfriend. His job is to help her through college and keep her safe until the end of the trial in eight months’ time.

For three years she has been the broken, damaged girl, refusing to feel emotion or pain, but can Ashton help her rebuild her life and finally deal with the grief of losing her childhood sweetheart? Will he be the one to make her see that life is, in fact, worth living and that not all men will hurt her?

All the while, the shadow of the trial looms over the both of them, taunting them, reminding them that it isn’t over yet. After all, Carter Thomas will stop at nothing to be reunited with his ‘Princess’.

Due to heavy subject matter and sexual content, this book is recommended for ages 17+

Nothing Left to Lose is a sexy New Adult romance dealing with love, lust, loss and grief. First uploaded on Wattpad, it surpassed 25 million reads before publication.

4.5 Stars

Review: This was a really amazing story about, as hokey as it sounds, love really helping someone heal from some pretty traumatic things. I don't think that I was prepared for how the book starts, and I was pretty traumatized by what happens with Annabelle's boyfriend, Jack, but it gives you a good picture for what Anna, herself, is about to experience for the next 10 months of her life.

We then move forward four years, when Ashton Taylor has recently graduated from police training as a SWAT member, and he is assigned to watch over Anna, as she is receiving threats from Carter, the man that murdered Jack and kept her for 10 months. Anna has, rightfully so, been acting out and pushing every one away since being rescued three years ago. She continually gets kicked out of colleges due to acting out, keeps getting re-assigned body guards because she doesn't know that she still needs one. But she is then assigned Ashton, but this situation is a little different. He is asked to pose as her boyfriend, rather than just her guard.

My one issue with this is that Anna kind of immediately opens up to Ashton, more so than she has with any other person in three years. A lot of people call that "insta-love" in books, but I do know that people will occasionally meet someone that they open up to for one reason or another. It's still a little bit of a battle, though, and Ashton works hard to get Anna to let him in. I do think that that is realistic for someone that has been through what she has been through.

This book surprised me at how long it was, and I have to admit that I did skim a little here and there, but I will say this. Ashton Taylor is one of the most amazing guys I've read about recently. He's totally an alpha male, but he was so not afraid to be real with Anna and to be vulnerable. There were a few times that he basically just said "look, I like you...please give me a chance". I wanted to slap some sense into Anna every single one of those times.

The nightmare comes back, however, when Carter, her previous tormentor, is released from prison. Anna makes some pretty crazy decisions, doing what she hopes will protect the most people, and Ashton is sent away. This was another place where I felt like the book was a little unrealistic. I don't think her father, who had become the President of the United States by this point, really would let her choose her guard, at age 19, when the one she had was doing a great job. This sets in motion some really sad things, however, but Ashton does not give up on Anna, and he fights for her - in more ways than one.

This is a great story, and I do recommend it - especially if you're a fan of the New Adult genre.
