Review: Tohrment's story has broken my heart since the moment that he lost Wellsie, his shellan. Absent for a few books, he made his return a while back, but he has barely been living since that time. He is just surviving, and really, barely even that on most days. He has a plan to try to get killed so that he can join Wellsie. He doesn't really even see how that would affect others around him - especially John. Their relationship is sorely tested once John realizes that Tohrment, or his absence, still has the power to hurt him, and he is very tired of being hurt. All of this stops, however, when Tohrment learns that Wellsie was unable to go into the Fade because of him. In fact, she and their child are suffering in a weird, in between world, and it is up to him to set her free.
Thus begins Tohrment's journey to let others in, and to try to give his body and his heart to someone else so that she has a chance for the Fade. Xhex's mom, No'One, or Autumn, as Tohr renames her, plays a big part in this, as she and Tohr already had a previous connection. In fact, their stories are intertwined in more ways than one. In some ways, it was very difficult to read, as Tohr punishes himself and Autumn in different ways. Her guilt at her own previous life choices allows him to do so, all while beginning to love him. And, of course, evil is piling up around the rest of the Brotherhood, and the world does not slow down just for everyone to figure out their love lives. Danger is all around them, now, and it comes from several different directions.

Review of Lover Unleashed (Black Dagger Brotherhood #9) by J.R. Ward

Synopsis: Payne, twin sister of Vishous, is cut from the same dark, warrior cloth as her brother: A fighter by nature, and a maverick when it comes to the traditional role of Chosen females, there is no place for her on the Far Side… and no role for her on the front lines of the war, either.

When she suffers a paralyzing injury, human surgeon Dr. Manuel Manello is called in to treat her as only he can- and he soon gets sucked into her dangerous, secret world. Although he never before believed in things that go bump in the night- like vampires- he finds himself more than willing to be seduced by the powerful female who marks both his body and his soul.

As the two find so much more than an erotic connection, the human and vampire worlds collide … just as a centuries old score catches up with Payne and puts both her love and her life in deadly jeopardy.

Review: I was really looking forward to Payne's story, once she was introduced, not only as Vishous's sister, the Scribe Virgin's daughter, but also as a female warrior. Payne has been frozen for over two hundred years, though her mother, the Scribe Virgin, recently awakened her. I still can't quite figure out how I feel about the Scribe Virgin, the mother of the Vampires, but she definitely has made some poor choices with both of her children. This is very apparent with Payne's story. In fact, when Payne is injured with an injury that could prove paralyzing, she still refuses to let her mother heal her because she knows that this would mean she must stay with her, rather than to be set free.

Wrath, the King, convinces the Scribe Virgin to let him care for Payne, however, so she is brought to his compound and training center. At this point, there is not much hope, however, so the Vampires turn, once again, to a human doctor to help them. This particular doctor and Payne immediately feel a connection, however, so it only further complicates matters for both Wrath and Vishous, Payne's twin brother. As usual, there are many nuances to this story, many continuations of other stories, but I have to say that Manuel stole the show for me. I really wasn't expecting him to, either, so it was quite surprising.

Manny shows, from page one, almost, that, while he may have a very rough and demanding outer shell, he feels very strongly towards those that buck the system or fight, despite many barriers. He is immediately drawn to Payne, but he is also willing to give her up to make everyone else happy. These two have to learn how to fight for one another - even if that means fighting against others in their family. The trick is that neither of them know, at first, that they can fight for one another, so it adds a lot of anxiety to their story.

Meanwhile, there are some new guys on the scene. I'm not sure, yet, how I feel about them. I'm anxious to see what these new enemies bring to the stage.

Review of Lover Mine (Black Dagger Brotherhood #8) by J.R. Ward

Indeed, the fallen Brother Darius has returned, but with a different face and a very different destiny. As a vicious personal vendetta takes John into the heart of the war, he will need to call up on both who he is now and who he once was in order to face off against evil incarnate.

Xhex, a symphath assassin, has long steeled herself against the attraction between her and John Matthew. Having already lost one lover to madness, she will not allow the male of worth to fall prey to the darkness of her twisted life. When fate intervenes, however, the two discover that love, like destiny, is inevitable between soul mates.

Review: So, let me begin by saying that I loved this book, and I loved John Matthew's story. He has been such a steady and, for me, important character throughout each book. I have not really understood his attraction and connection with Xhex before now, not because she is a fighter and supposedly masculine - but because she is so closed off, and John Matthew has been looking for connection his whole life. I was really expecting to just have to accept that this is who he will mate with, and I will continue to like him and just not like her. I. Was. Wrong.

There is a lot of depth to Xhex, and there is a huge connection between the two characters that I truly did not expect to have happen. This author does continue to amaze me with her storytelling abilities and how she adds new layers and new depths to each character, as well as each couple's story. For some, it happens very slowly, while others arrive with a bang. John Matthew and Xhex's happens slowly, for the most part, and then BANG...something happens that completely and forever ties them together - if they can find one another.

I don't want to give too much away, however, I will say that the fight against Lash and the lessers continues because Lash has captured Xhex, and the Brotherhood is having a very difficult time finding him. John is going crazy and Blay, Q and even Tohr, are having a difficult time reigning him back in. Meanwhile, Xhex is experiencing some pretty horrible things that are testing every bit of her inner and outer strength. Even if the Brotherhood wins this battle, the war is still going, and there are definitely still casualties.

I did have a few difficulties with this book. I enjoyed the back story of Darius and Tohr, but I think I was under the impression that there would be this big reveal where everyone realized that John is the Brother Darius, reincarnated. That did not happen, however, which was frustrating. Why is that the back story if it will not be figured out - as opposed to John just being Darius unknown son? Also, I could not quite understand why Muhrder was mentioned, as his story was amusing, but not connected back to the Brothers. Especially, as his story included a side story about a producer and tv show host that took up several chapters of the book. Will more come back around regarding this? It feels strange, otherwise.

I will say that there is one thing that continues to sadden me with each new book. The Scribe Virgin. She seems to slowly be fading away, and no one that notices seems at all concerned or willing to help her in any way - and she is supposed to be the mother of their race. It seems as though everyone is really more concerned with themselves than her - when history, custom, laws, etc, previously were all about her. I'm not sure what, if anything, will happen with this storyline, although I am curious, as the next book is about her daughter. Hopefully, this will answer some questions.

Review: I have been looking forward to Rehvenge's story for several books now. He is fascinating with the two opposing sides within him - Vampire and Sympath. Few know his secret, or else he would be relegated to the Sympath colony, where he would most likely be killed very quickly. Instead, those that do know either try to protect him, or, in one case, blackmail him for their own evil purposes. In some ways, it was interesting to read about a strong, alpha male type that was being blackmailed - and the way that he was being blackmailed - because you get to see his inner strength at work when his actual body is not always able to be at it's best.

He soon comes across Ehlena, a Vampire who has lost her place in the glymera, due to shady dealings from people that took advantage of her father while he was in a weakened state, mentally. Ehlena is a nurse at Havers's clinic, and, after she takes a risk for Rehvenge, for which she receives consequences, he recognizes that he wants to take care of her even though he is not in a place where he is able to do so. Before long, his secret gets into the wrong hands, and, in order to protect those around him, Rev does turn himself in to the Sympath colony.

The Brotherhood, Ehlena, Xhex and the Shadows - none of them are the same without him, however. Ehlena finally convinces everyone to help her find him, as she claims him as her mate, and they have to help. What they find in that colony, however, is truly dark and evil. Even though all of these books are dark and have some creepy elements, at times, this book has felt the darkest, so far, once the group in in the Sympath colony. Even though they may find Rev, however, it does not mean that they will get him out without other losses to the group because there is always another enemy working against them. Lash. The Omega's son is still looking for ways to make life hard for pretty much everyone around him. With the help of the Sympath King, he just may succeed, unless the Brotherhood can prevent him from doing so.

Again, this author is great. I can't seem to put these books down, and I am truly dreading coming to the end of what is available.

As his first mate, the Chosen Cormia wants to win not only his body, but his heart for herself. She is drawn to the noble responsibility behind the emotionally scarred male. But Phury has never allowed himself to know pleasure or joy. As the war with the Lessening Society grows grim, tragedy looms over the Brotherhood's mansion, and Phury must decide between duty and love....

Review: I was not sure how I would feel about Phury, as he has been slowly making his descent into being a drug addict for a while now. It seemed as though, once Z found Bella and Phury did not have to watch out for him as much, he has just let go of everything within himself. Things go so far, even, that everything in his life is touched - which is so true of how addiction works.

Phury has taken V's place as the Primale, and he is to be bonded to all of the Chosen. Cormia has been named as the First Mate, though she is not at all willing. Phury sees this, however, and decides to basically abduct Cormia and bring her back to the Other Side with him so that she can decide, on her own, what she wants. This actually allows both of them to draw closer to one another, though Phury continues to push Cormia away, along with everything else in his life.

Meanwhile, we see that John, Qhuinn and Blay continue to get closer through their training with the Brotherhood. One act, however, changes everything for these young men, as well as changing everything in the balance of the fight between the Vampires and the lessers. For, the Omega has had a trick up his sleeve, for many years now, and it is time for him to utilize this secret weapon. This turn of events also has lasting impact on everything - from the Brotherhood, to what Phury decides to do with the Chosen, and even to the King, himself.

I appreciated that the author included the option for NA meetings for Phury. One of the most touching moments in this book comes at the end between Z and Phury. I literally started crying at seeing this breakthrough in their relationship, as brothers. It continues to amaze me how bleak the future or the choices can seem for each of these characters, and yet, the author brings them through. It is not always in the easiest manner, and it certainly is not always with hearts and rainbows - there is always a balance that must be had, which includes bad things happening, but...she manages to make it work!

Review: This story broke my heart. Vishous is the sexy and somewhat untouchable of the Brothers, but he is spiraling out of control now that his somewhat love interests, Butch and Marissa, are happily bonded together. Then, to make matters worse, he is called, by the Scribe Virgin, to be the Primale - the male that is supposed to be with all of the Chosen and father the next generation of Brothers, as well as the next generation of Chosen. In the midst of being asked this, he finds out about some of the secrets of his birth, but none of this new knowledge can take away from the bitterness inside of him at the attention he received from his father, the Bloodletter. And this is one of the first places that my heart breaks for him - for Vishous was completely abused, and I am not sure how he made it out of his childhood or his transition.

One night, soon before he is to take his place as Primale, he gets hurt in the field and is taken to a real emergency room before any of the Brotherhood find out to get him. There, he is operated on and saved by Dr. Jane Whitcomb. The book begins with part of Jane's story, from when she was 13, and we find out that she finds out she will marry someone named Vishous, which she thinks is just a silly joke - for Jane is a human. When the Brothers find out where Vishous is, they come to save him before the humans figure things out, and he has had a vision and knows that Jane is important, so they take her with them.

From there, we slowly see the bonding magic come to work for Vishous and Jane, as he is slowly healed from the inside out, of what happened to him in his past in his father's camp, from recently finding out who his mother is, as well as his relationship with Butch. Phury also steps up, when he takes Vishous's place as the Primale so that V can be with Jane. Seeing how the Brotherhood works - for and with one another - is such a great foundation to each of these books. The fight against the lessers is still going, though, and Jane is much more fragile in this fight, as she is a human. This is the next place that my heart breaks for Vishous, as he has to come to terms with Jane's existence, as she is very strong in her work ethic but also wants to be part of Vishous's life. Will they be able to do this, however?

So, without giving away too much, I have to share that seeing Vishous come full circle with his mother, as well as the sacrifice that she ends up making for him - it literally made me cry. Then, to see him realize that he maybe did have a mother who cared for him, and to gift her with something that she loved in return - more tears!!

Review of Lover Revealed (Black Dagger Brotherhood #4) by J.R. Ward

And he wants to go even deeper into the vampire world-to engage in the turf war with the lessers. He's got nothing to lose. His heart belongs to a female vampire, an aristocratic beauty who's way out of his league. If he can't have Marissa, then at least he can fight side by side with the Brothers...

Fate curses him with the very thing he wants. When Butch sacrifices himself to save a civilian vampire from the slayers, he falls prey to the darkest force in the war. Left for dead, he's found by a miracle, and the Brotherhood calls on Marissa to bring him back. But even her love may not be enough to save him...

Review: I struggled with Butch and Marissa's story, for some reason. I really liked both characters, and I think that Butch has been a great addition to the Brotherhood's group since the first book, but their story just did not pull me in as much as some of the others, so far. I have been trying to figure out why this is, as Butch and Marissa sort of have this Romeo and Juliet quality to their story, which I usually love, but Marissa also comes across somewhat blandly, at times. I think, in many ways, that is probably a huge part of her story and her past, as part of the glymera, and as Wrath's former shellan, but it also makes it hard to really feel drawn to her.

Butch has been somewhat like glue to the Brotherhood. As a human, he is able to be their eyes, at times, such as during the day, or to get information that the Brotherhood could not get as easily. He has been drawn to Marissa since he saw her. He is amazed at her beauty, as well as how fragile she looks but how much strength she actually holds. He does not feel worthy of her, however, as he is a human, and he also has a dark past with his own demons. Marissa's strength plays a huge part in keeping Butch together, however, once he is dangerously injured. Marissa's strength, that is, as well as Vishous's mysterious powers.

The author's writing definitely improves with each book that I have read in this series, and I am continuously impressed with how she weaves all of the stories together, as though you are watching a series. She also brings twists and turns that tie up or create new story lines in very creative ways. Butch, who never seemed to fit in within his own family, while growing up, feels more connected to his new Brothers. In many ways, that is because he has the ability to be part of them - as well as a new ability that is somewhat of a secret weapon. Just when I think all hope is lost for Butch, there is another twist. So, just like glue keeps things together, Butch does this for the Brotherhood, and I hope he continues to do so, along with continuing to encourage Marissa to become more strong in herself, as well.

Review: Zsadist's story was so heartbreaking! As Ward slowly weaves each Brother's story into the others, you already get to see how trapped Z is by his past. He has scars, not just on the outside of his body, but also deep inside of him, as well. Bella, the female vampire that brought John and Mary to the Brotherhood's attention, has been drawn to Z since she met him. She tries to reach out to him, but he is unwilling to open up to anyone else. When Bella goes home, she is captured by one of the lesser, who sees Bella as someone that used to be close to him, when he was still alive. He decides to keep her as his wife, unbeknownst to his other lessers.

The Brotherhood, and Z, specifically, look for Bella for weeks. They finally get lucky and get information about where she is being held. Z feels a strong connection to Bella, even though he continues to push her away, so he has to be the one to find her and bring her home. Thus begins the battle between the two of them - Z to stay away from Bella and Bella to capture Z's heart from his past. The scenes from Z's time as a Blood slave are very difficult to go through, for they are so heartbreaking - not just for his physical violation but also for how he gives up on himself.

Bella's fight for Z is to help him find himself again - and also to help Phury, Z's twin brother, who's fate is forever tied to Z's. Zsadist will not be rescued easily, however, as he faced much abuse and violation and does not feel worthy of Bella. For her, however, his brokenness is a part of what she loves. Her love for him and her fight for him made this story truly beautiful to watch because the Brother is supposed to be the strong warrior, and yet, I think Bella shows more strength than Z in this book.

Review: This story continues the work of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, and you learn more about Rhage's story. Rhage, not unlike some of the other Brothers, has a curse - he has a dark monster inside of him that comes out when he is in serious danger, usually from the lesser. He and Mary cross paths when she is brought to the Brotherhood's compound by Bella, along with John Matthew. Confused yet? That's what makes these stories so amazing to me - they are consistently introducing new characters or making sure to mention little tidbits of the old stories, as well.

Basically, John is a pretransition Vampire, and he has been checking in on Mary, who volunteers at a suicide hotline, and once he meets her, he also meets Bella, Mary's neighbor, who is a vampire, herself. She has suspicions that he might be connected to the Brotherhood, or at the very least, without a family, so she contacts them and takes Mary with them. Mary is John's translator, due to his being unable to speak.

Rhage is still healing from his most recent bout with his monster when he first meets Mary, but her voice resonates within him and eases him in ways that he has not experienced in a long time, so he finds her and begins to spend time with her, even though she is a human - and a frail one, at that. Mary's days are numbered, so Rhage decides to fight to bring her into their world. Meanwhile, the battle with the lesser continues to heat up, putting all of them in danger at various times. Mary's frailty finally catches up to her, too, and Rhage has to decide if he is able and willing to fight for her with the Scribe Virgin, their version of a creator.

I liked this story because Rhage has been fighting his two different parts for so long that he does not realize how much he has come to count on both - until he meets Mary, and she is able to tame both parts. Rhage, who is also known as Hollywood, for being so sexy and attractive, is willing to take anything and everything that he can get from Mary, who is not at her peak and most healthy when the two meet. She still comes across as having strength, however, and is willing to fight for herself and anyone else, including the monster within Rhage. They had a sweet story of redemption and sacrifice that I really enjoyed. There are still things about this author that kind of annoy me - mainly some of the slang words that she has the guys saying - like "hang a louie" and "what's the sitch". I just can't imagine these guys really saying those things, for some reason. It will probably drive me crazy with each of these books.

But, when one of his most trusted fighters is killed-leaving his half-breed daughter unaware of his existence or her fate-Wrath must usher her into the world of the undead-a world of sensuality beyond her wildest dreams.

I really enjoyed this book for several reasons: I liked the take on this author's version of Vampires, it's not all hearts and flowers and eternity; it's war, and Wrath, as an imperfect King, was different to read about. The point of view changes very abruptly, at times, so that took some getting used to, but I do enjoy having multiple points of view. As I am just starting this series, and there are already quite a few books written, it is nice to start seeing bits and pieces of the other characters, so that you already feel invested in their stories.

We first meet Wrath when he meets with Darius, one of his brothers in the Black Dagger Brotherhood, an elite group of vampire warriors, bound to protect their civilization. Wrath is the King, and he is also mostly blind, as well as being the last purebred Vampire left. Darius wants Wrath to help him with his half-human daughter, as she is getting close to her transition into becoming a Vampire. At first, Wrath is unwilling to help, as he has little use for humans, but several events lead to his path running across Beth, anyways. At that point, he can't help but to be drawn to her.

Beth, who is unaware of her half-Vampire status, and certainly unaware of the fact that her life is about to completely change, is a reporter that is constantly chasing after police officers and crime in their town of Caldwell, NY. After a scary incident, she comes across a very intimidating man that keeps popping up in her life, though she is not certain if he is safe or dangerous. Wrath is there for Beth, however, when she truly needs him, and her life is forever entangled with the Brotherhood after that.

There is definitely more to come with this story, which I am excited to read about. All of the Brotherhood are such flawed characters, despite how strong they are, so it's a nice difference from the typical, perfect and flawless Vampire story. There are a few grammatical errors, as well as shortened words or slang that the author uses that don't quite seem appropriate for big, bad warriors to use, so I keep noticing them. Otherwise, I am hooked on these guys.
