Review: Wow. Secrets is the word that definitely captures Saylor's and Gabe story. Well, that and heartbreak. Gabe was such a big part of Wes and Kiersten's story, so I was already rooting for him to get his life sorted out and be able to be happy. Even from their story, you could tell that he was carrying around a big burden, and he had a lot of guilt that he seemed to be dealing with. When Wes was in the hospital, Gabe even made the comment that he wished it was him, rather than Wes, because he deserved it. So, I knew that I was in for something heavy with Gabe. 

Heavy is definitely the weight of the burden that Gabe carries. He made some bad choices in his past, and they impacted, not only his life, but someone else's life, as well - and he is still paying the price for that. Saylor, however, is just trying to keep her head down and her life focused on her goal - which is to make it through college and help her mom out. 

Saylor comes across Gabe letting off some steam in a music practice room. She spies on him after she hears the amazing talent that he has, and, in anger, he lashes out at her and kisses her. What begins is a definite hate, hate relationship for a while. Saylor is constantly thrown in Gabe's path, however, and he continues to try to push her away. There were a few things that I had trouble seeing past, with this, however. Gabe was an absolute douche to Saylor, and she would almost seem to have amnesia of some of the things he did or said. I don't know many girls that can completely over look things, yet she seemed to be completely unfazed by things, at times. I don't want to detract from their overall story, however, as they were both instrumental in either healing the other or just...opening the other up to the world, at large. 

I am starting to see a theme, however, of a girl that is scared and closed off to the world, and a super rich, attractive guy that comes along and saves her, after she, of course, also helps him overcome something important in life. I don't want that to be the only theme in these stories, but it is definitely there in both of these books, so far. Gabe's story is worth a read, however!

Review of Ruin by Rachel Van Dyken

Synopsis: I'm not your typical girl. I've been running away from the memories that haunt me for so long that depression has become my only comfort. I was content in the darkness...until Wes Michals offered to be my light.
I didn't know that time wasn't my ally -- that every second that ticked past was one step closer to the end of something that was beginning to mean the end of myself. He tried to warn me. He promised me all he was able to offer--each moment as it came--but it would never be enough.

Sometimes when you think it's the end, it's only the beginning. Wes thought he could save me, but in giving me everything, he ruined me. Because after one kiss, one touch, I couldn't--I wouldn't ever be the same.

And from that moment on, his heartbeat became my own.

Review: Kiersten has faced something in her life that no one should have to face - family tragedy. She has been surviving for the past two years, and she runs into Wes on her first day on campus at her new college, and she slowly begins to thaw. The two of them actually do run into each other, and unbeknownst to her, Kiersten is totally feeling Wes up and COUNTING HIS ABS...out loud!! After having a good laugh at her, Wes tries to help Kiersten get where she needs to be, which turns out to be his dorm room, as he is her RA!

This book starts off with a really emotional prologue, so you honestly read the whole book just waiting for the other shoe to drop. Kiersten is very naive and guarded, mainly due to her recent past, and Wes is just living one day at a time. He takes Kiersten under his wing but also begins to have feelings for her, as well. It does not take her long to feel the same, but she is constantly confused by the distance that he keeps between the two. He realizes that she is innocent and precious and treats her as such, which is coompletely adorable, as he calls her his "lamb", and she calls him the "wolf". 

Kiersten begins to realize that she has not been living life, however, and she makes a list of things that she wants to do. Wes decides to help her, and they have some funny, some cute, some hilarious, and some swoon-worthy moments. You almost forget that you are still waiting on that shoe, however...until it drops. And then, you wonder how much life can throw at Kiersten before she breaks. You wonder why Wes deserves what has been thrown his way...and then, you just wait. You hold your breath and you wait to see what happens. Have some tissues handy for this one!

Elect (Eagle Elite #2) by Rachel Van Dyken

In the end, a sacrifice must be made. A life for a life. For what better way to cover a multitude of sins than with the blood of a sinner . . .

Review: This second book in the Eagle Elite series picks up where the first left off. Nixon and Trace's pasts are connected and there is still question about whether or not Nixon's father murdered her parents. Her grandfather made a quick decision, however, that now prevents Nixon and Trace from easily being together. Chase, Nixon's best friend, right hand man, and cousin, has always stood in for him and watched over Trace. Nixon has even purposefully pushed Chase and Trace together, at times, as he selflessly tried to protect her, at the expense of his own wants and desires.

Chase, always the proverbial playboy, has begun to really care for Trace, though. In fact, he has betrayed Nixon in the worst way - he has wished to take Nixon's place and be there for Trace to love as he loves her. The leaders of some of the other mafia families are investigating recent actions, however, so it is not safe for anyone at this time. Not to mention, one of Nixon's own betrayed him in the worst way, and he must figure out how to deal with the one that betrayed him, as well as to figure out secrets from the past in time to save them all.

I enjoyed the love triangle that Nixon, Trace and Chase fell into, as that always provides a lot of angst and chaos to the story, but I began to have issues with the story in this book, as it just seemed like these guys went from being bully college students to mafia hit men within the matter of days. The story makes it seem like they have always been that way, too, but you really don't see that in the first book. So, I did struggle with that transition quite a bit. Otherwise, I enjoyed seeing more of the lies, deceptions and betrayals from decades past re-play themselves in the present.

Review: Tracey, or Trace, Rooks wins a scholarship to an elite college that will guarantee her a successful life well beyond her current life on her grandfather's ranch in Wyoming. Her grandmother recently passed away, and her grandfather seems determined for her to follow through on this scholarship and achieve all that she can. Her first experience at Eagle Elite, however, is less than inviting. She very quickly learns that she is pretty much on her own, as family members can't even enter the dorms. Her grandfather leaves her, and she meets the Elect, a group of senior guys that are very aware of their own importance and rule the school by bullying others and making them live by certain rules.

Nixon, the leader of this group, seems to hate Trace on sight. He lets her know that she is nowhere near good enough to even breathe the same air as her, and he begins a quest to prove this to her over and over. He also seems to be drawn to her, however, so he can never completely follow through with his threats towards her. Among his group of friends, however, is someone that resents Nixon's power and resents Trace's ability to push back against him and not have consequences.

Trace, herself, has a past that she is unaware of, and she is connected to Nixon in more ways than she can imagine. Nixon and his friends are part of a very dangerous world, and Trace is soon introduced to this world. Very soon, Trace is in danger, herself, and many secrets from their past begin to come out. Before all is said and done, Nixon will have to choose between having a future and having Trace. This book had just enough mystery and just enough angst to really pull you in!
