The toughest fighters aren’t created in the octagon but are born of necessity. When life delivers blow after punishing blow, you fight back or get destroyed.

Eve Dawson has had her fill of bad luck. A string of unhealthy relationships has left her angry, bitter, and frustrated. She’s given up on being happy and settles for content. Swearing off men, she repels advances and makes herself a challenge to even the most persistent suitors. After all, how much can the fragile human heart take? But life isn’t finished with her, and when things can’t possibly get worse . . . they do.

Stay on your feet.

It’s Cameron Kyle’s motto, but with his fighting career ripped from his grasp, a child he wasn’t strong enough to save, and a marriage that even the brawn of a heavyweight couldn’t hold together, it’s getting harder and harder to stay upright. He takes on the position of CEO of the UFL, intent on hiding his biggest weakness in order to forge a path that leads him back into the octagon.

When an old rival mysteriously gets wind of Cameron’s plan to fight again, he comes out of retirement to settle old debts, but secrets, lies, and betrayal threaten to deliver the death-blow. The distraction of a sass-mouthed girl seventeen years his junior is the last thing he needs until a tragic accident shatters the firm foundation of his resolve and he realizes just how far he’s fallen.

Will they risk it all and fight to be together? Or does defeat lie within the fall?

Excerpt

I feel his eyes on me, and when I turn I almost recoil at the intensity behind his stare. “Can you stop acting like we’re two old friends shooting the shit when you know good and fucking well you’re thinking the same thing I am.”

My mouth falls open and I force it shut, only to have it drop open again.

“I’ve hand my hands and my mouth all over every inch of that gorgeous body, Eve. You think I can’t read you? Know what you’re thinking about right now?”

I swallow hard. “What am I thinking about?”

“Same thing I am.”

Review of Fighting to Forget by J.B. Salsbury

Synopsis: Every fighter is drawn to the violence, the release that a perfect hit can bring.
But very few are drawn to the pain.

Rex Carter lives behind a wall of indifference. The demons from his childhood act as an anesthetic, keeping him distant from emotional connections. Only the ache from a knock to the jaw, the sting of a tattoo needle, or the heat from a piercing can jolt him back from the numbness. The fiery pain is all he can feel, and nothing compares to the burn.

Or so he thought.

Working in a Las Vegas bar isn't Georgia McIntyre's dream. But she hopes it'll be an end to the nightmare.

She's watched him, followed him and kept tabs, all in preparation for this moment: to make amends and share the secret she’s been carrying since she was a kid. But she didn't count on the feelings that seeing him again would stir up, the vacant look in his stormy-blue eyes, and his perfect body now mutilated by ink and metal.

And she knows why. She's lived his pain every single day, since the day he left.

Changed by time, Rex doesn't remember the girl from his past. If only she could do the same.

Will she get the absolution she's spent her life seeking?

Or will he continue Fighting to Forget?

5 Stars!

Review: I absolutely loved Rex and Gia's story. They are both so broken due to their pasts, and yet both of them are still surviving and trying to figure out a way to keep going. They share a past of so much pain, heartache and abuse, and yet both of them are still fighting - Rex, as an MMA fighter and Gia, she's fighting for Rex, even if he doesn't know it.

Rex and Gia's story goes back about fourteen years, and both of them experienced things that no child should EVER have to experience. Rex has no memory before age 10, when he woke up in a hospital after supposedly trying to kill himself, and Gia, she does remember what Rex's life was like. She was there, as well, and she has taken on so much of the burden of what he experienced. She blames herself, even still, and she will do anything to take Rex's pain away.

The two of them come together, despite their brokenness, and they take that first, single step towards healing. Before they can take any more, however, some of Gia's secrets come out and Rex pushes her away. Gia simply crumbles at that point. I'm not sure there's another word for that - it's like she was living and getting her strength from Rex, even from afar, and when he pushed her away, the life that she has been dealt became too much. At this point, however, Gia's life is in danger, and Rex has to figure out if he can forgive her enough to fight for her this time.

This story was raw and gritty and...just dark. It was done very well, however, and so many things tie back to their past. Other characters from the series also make an appearance, which I loved, as I really just love all of these characters. They are such lonely and broken people that are coming together and choosing to be a family with one another. It is very great to watch. And Rex and Gia - they might just be my favorites, so far. To come from something so broken and fight every single day...it is great to watch.

Review of Fighting to Forgive by J.B. Salsbury

Synopsis: What do you do when everything you avoid, turns out to be exactly what you need?
Easy and predictable, just the way he likes it, Blake Daniels flies through life the way he burns through women: on his terms, no regrets.

With his fighting career in full swing, he's on the threshold of title contention. But when his training is compromised by injury, the stakes grow impossibly higher. The rage that fuels his punches also chips away at his focus, and he risks losing everything he cares about.

He won’t let that happen. Not again.

Layla’s through with men. After a marriage that never should’ve happened, she hopes to reclaim the pieces of the woman she lost years ago.

Emotional abuse has left her insecure and terrified. A master at faking what she’s not feeling, she masks her self-doubt in false confidence.

She’ll never let another man hurt her. Not again.

Chased by shadows of the past, Blake and Layla know what they don’t want, but their hearts have a different plan. As a web of lies and betrayal threatens to destroy them, they’re forced to make a choice.

Is love enough to heal even the deepest wounds?

Or will they be left Fighting to Forgive?

4.75 Stars!

Review: I loved Blake and Layla's story...or should I say Mouse and Snake - how appropriate was that? I have to start by saying that I had no clue for about 60% of the book what Blake's secret could be, based on the prologue for this book. His story starts everything off very well, though, because you see a young boy that is torn away from his family and forced, in many ways, to become the man that he is today - a fighter, very much detached from his emotions and only about the physical aspects of life. This, of course, includes women and relationships - or the lack, thereof.

Layla, on the other hand, has just arrived in Vegas, which is where Blake, as an MMA fighter, resides. She and her daughter, Axelle Rose, or Elle, are running from a pretty tough past of their own. Blake is captivated by Layla from the very beginning, however. He even breaks one of his own rules - no moms - to be with her. The two of them have a difficult time trusting one another, and Layla's past just does not make it easy for her to get close to someone, physically, and that is about the only way that Blake knows how to get close to someone. So, needless to say, they have their work cut out for them. Meanwhile, Layla's past isn't staying in the past, and it plays a big role in Blake's life and his fighting, as well. He begins to fear that he will become someone that he does not like if he is not able to hold onto his new feelings for Layla.

I have to say that I appreciated this book and the topics that it touched on. It is so difficult to see women at a point when they have suffered so much abuse, as Layla has, and not even be able to put words to it or call it what it is - rape. It was also difficult to watch Layla not only come to terms with what was done to her, but to also help her daughter learn how to express what she witnessed for many years. I loved that they began going to therapy to work through these things. It showed that their relationship was just as important to the story as Layla's and Blake's. Also, Blake's birthday gift to Axelle at the end was completely heart melting! That's all I'm going to say. Loved this and can't wait for the next one!
