Review: Zeke by Harper Bentley

Title: Zeke (The Powers That Be #2)
Author: Harper Bentley
Release Date: March 31, 2015
Find on Goodreads

Zeke Powers should’ve come with a warning label.

He was hot.

He was sexy.

And he was a bad boy through and through.

The things he said to me had me blushing and my toes curling.

But he was someone I totally didn’t need walking into my life, screwing up the plans I’d made and turning my world upside down.

Although I’d been living a no-frills, no-fun existence, I felt it was necessary to get where I was going. Keep your eye on the prize and all that.

But Zeke was determined to prove to me that what I desired most—him—was just what I needed.

New adult. Not recommended for readers under 17.

If you read Gable and like it, you will like Zeke.  The Powers brothers seem like bad boys but deep down are such sweet hearts that are passionate.

I would have liked parts of the story to be developed more.  Zeke is a total hottie but his character wasn't defined for me until the very end.  I would have liked to be inside his head a little more when it came to some situations and to know exactly how he felt about Scarlett.

As for Scarlett, I can relate to her in many ways.  She's timid and cautious to let down her guard due to the past.  I wish though, instead of jumping to conclusions, which she would do frequently, she would have stopped to listen and hear people out.

These two stubborn, hot-heads though, when they come together.....fireworks!  I loved all of their "encounters"

Can't wait to find out about the next Powers brother!

4 HOT stars

Gable (The Powers That Be #1)
Released December 2014
Gable Powers had all the makings of everything my father had ever warned me about: a reputation that was anything but stellar, a dirty mouth that had me shivering at the things he uttered in my ear, and a body (oh, God, that body) that was covered in tattoos, all of which added up to a solid ten-point-oh on the bad-boy scale.

The first time I met him, I instantly loathed him.

The second time was even worse.

He was a jerk. He was an ass.

He had secrets.

He was nothing I thought I ever wanted.

So why couldn’t I resist him?

Review:

Oh how I just loved this book!  Gable is a jerk with a big head.  He's the typical good looking boy who knows it and doesn't hide it.  Scout finds him attractive but she realized what a jerk he can be.  She does not just instantly fall for him or want him like most girls.  She does not put up with his crap either.  Scout then begins to get to know Gable because of a class project and from work.  At work, he is the jerk but begins to open up.  Through the class project, Scout gets to see a tender side of Gable which makes him so much more likable.  Does Scout give him a chance or write him off?

“I miss the white outfit,” he stated then put his hands on my hips, moving them down to where his fingers skimmed along the hem of my shorts then started moving them slowly back toward my bottom. “But these hot pink shorts make you look completely fuckable too.”
That brought me out of my stupor and I spun around, glaring up at him. “You can’t talk to me like that!” I hissed under my breath, glancing around self-consciously to make sure no one was watching our exchange.
He peered down at my chest where my nipples were standing at full attention under my t-shirt. “From the looks of it, I think you like me talking to you like that.” Then he leaned in closer. “What’s the matter? Never been talked dirty to before, Priss?” When he pulled back, I saw that the half grin was now going strong and his luminous brown eyes were dancing with humor at his having riled me.
Holy hell.
As I kept glowering at him, having no response to that, I noticed a girl next to us gawking at us, and embarrassed, I smiled shyly at her, tucking a piece of hair behind my ear, trying to act normal. When she turned away, I whisper-hissed at him, “Are you kidding me right now? Just who do you think you are?”
He bent again to get close to my ear. “I’m the guy who’ll have you coming hard before the semester’s over,” he answered evenly, his eyes shimmering with cockiness as they burned into mine when he stood straight again.
Mesmerized, I gazed back at him, lost in him, wanting what he was selling, God, how did he do that, until it hit me that I should be offended by his boldness and I suddenly frowned. “What is your deal?” I screeched making several students look at me and felt my face burning even hotter than it already was at his inappropriate comments. I turned to get away from him mumbling, “Oh, my God,” but he grabbed me by the arm pulling me in close.
“You don’t  have to call me God. Gable works, but I’m sure I’ll be making you scream both soon,” he whispered close to my ear.
I pushed against his chest (of course he didn’t budge at all) and jerked my arm from his grasp with a scowl then moved as far away from him as I could, going to the back of the line to wait until he left. Standing there, I closed my eyes trying to get a hold of myself but could still see his seductive gaze searing into mine as he smirked while saying those things to me, as if he was so confident that they’d happen regardless of what I had to say about it.
And the really bad thing about it? As I stood there, a complete emotional mess from what’d just happened, I found I actually wanted those things to happen, which served to embarrass me even more not to mention just totally baffle me. I mean, I’d only slept with one guy, Hayden, my first and only boyfriend, and that’d been after we’d dated for almost a year so it wasn’t like I got around much, so what was wrong with me that I was all in for having sex with someone I barely knew? Someone who’d been an ass to me from day one. Someone who obviously had way more experience than I had.
As I stood behind everyone, I swallowed thickly, my cheeks still on fire, wondering who the hell I was, and when I moved my eyes to the front I saw Gable write his person’s number down in his notebook, smile at a girl who was gazing up at him like he was a damned rock star then he left without even a glance back at me.
When I finally got to the front, I wrote my person’s number down quickly and got the heck out of there because a few people were still watching me curiously. As I walked outside the building, I cautiously surveyed the area making sure Gable hadn’t hung around wanting to torment me some more but saw that he was off to my right talking to his friend, Mr. Tactful, and they were near the parking lot which was a good twenty yards away. I also saw that Gable was smoking. Well, total turnoff right there. Good. At least he had something about him that repulsed me (other than his cocky attitude, that is), and when I saw the coast was clear, I let out the breath I was holding, relief flooding over me along with a bit of disappointment at his unhealthy habit, and headed away in the opposite direction from him, going to my next class.

Review of Finally Us by Harper Bentley

Synopsis: They wanted forever… but is forever really their destiny?

When misunderstandings and unsavory characters get in their way, Ellen and Jag call it quits after nine years of being together. Now they find themselves in places with which they’re unaccustomed: Ellen is trying to get used to the idea of dating another man, having never gone out with anyone other than Jag, while Jag is coping with an injury and the loss of baseball, a game he’s played for most of his life. Neither is sure how to handle their new situation, but they’re dealing.

When a surprise trade lands Jag right back in the middle of things and right back into Ellen’s life, new boyfriend and all, can he keep his cool and prove to her that what they once had is what's right? Does Ellen still carry a torch for her first love or has she already fallen for her new baseball player, making it too late for them to start again?

The fight is on as Jag goes head-to-head with Ellen’s new love interest as he tries proving to her that their love deserves another shot. Can he win her back or is their dream of a perfect forever gone for good?

This is the third book of the True Love Trilogy.

Due to language and sexual content, this book is not recommended for readers under age 17.

4.5 Stars!

Review: This final book in the True Love Trilogy is a few months after Jag and Ellen's break up. They are both still going through a lot of emotions, but anger and hurt seem to be the main ones. Ellen is still hurt that Jag would not see how much his past actions were hurting her - mainly through his unwillingness to fight for her with his agent and the previous situation that he put himself in with the press. Jag couldn't get over the fact that Ellen didn't trust him.

They are both trying to move forward at this point, however. Ellen is back home and working as a Physical Therapist with other pro-athlete's and Jag is going through rehabilitation, himself, from his injury at the end of the last season. He gets really amazing news, however, that he gets to move back home and play for "his" team. He knows, though, that this means that he will have to face Ellen and figure out, once and for all, if he wants to fight for her, again.

Ellen, on the other hand, meets another guy and agrees to go on a date with him. She reasons that she has never been with anyone other than Jag, and she has to do something to get out of her funk. No sooner does she do this, however, than he moves back home. These two are so hard to watch, at that point, as they basically just keep layering hurt and misunderstandings on top of each other to prevent them from working through anything.

Jag and Ellen are meant to be together, though. They are that couple that you can't help but to root for because they have put in so much work, and they both care for one another. Just as in the past, though, they have to guard against others that don't want their relationship to succeed. I really liked seeing Jag finally wake up. I think that, just like with any relationship, both of them had a point. Ellen should have trusted Jag, but it might have been easier for her to trust him if he had fought a little harder for her, at times. It just goes to show that communication can definitely go a long way.

Blog Tour and Review: Bigger than the Sky by Harper Bentley

Title: Bigger Than the Sky (Serenity Point #1)
Author: Harper Bentley
Release Date: Sept 30, 2014
Find on Goodreads

Synopsis:
Five years ago, I left my fiancé, hotter than hot Navy SEAL Kade Kelly, at the altar.
No, I’m not an idiot.
Yes, I had my reasons.
Now I’ve made a new life for myself working at a large firm in Richmond and I’ve left the past behind. Or so I thought.
Upon returning to my hometown of Serenity Point, Virginia, to take care of some business, I find that Kade’s now home for good and he’s none too happy about my being here.
Two months. That’s all I’m staying then I’m out of here. Unless I believe the town’s pink-haired psychic’s prediction. Or embrace the sense of belonging I feel at being back home. Or give in to the emotions stirring inside when Kade's attention is suddenly on me.
He scares the crap out of me.
He thrills me.
He used to tell me our love was bigger than the sky.
I always knew ours was a once-in-a-lifetime love. So how can he be so sure it can happen again?

Review:

4.25 Stars!
In so many ways, I really loved this story. Five years ago, Amelia, or Mill, ran away from Kade, on their wedding day. She is now back in her hometown, however, to figure out what to do with her grandparent's service station, so she can no longer avoid everything concerning Kade, as he, his whole family, and many of their friends from her past still live there. You find out pretty quickly that Mill basically freaked out on her wedding day when she realized that, while she had always loved Kade, she had barely seen him in the few years prior to their wedding day, due to his training as a Navy SEAL. So, like any girl that comes from a broken home and a past where both of her own parents left her and ran to live their own lives, she chose to run, rather than to face Kade, marry him and then live by herself and feel swallowed up in him.

Kade was definitely the strong, silent type, while also being the alpha male that Mill had always loved. I liked that he didn't drag everything out for Mill. He let her know that she had hurt him, that he had been angry, and that he had thought a lot about her over the years. He also started chasing after her pretty quickly, though, because he had finally realized that she was what he wanted, and he probably should have gone after her to begin with. In many ways, this was an aspect that I liked, but I also had a hard time really believing. I guess, in my mind, I think Kade is the type of guy that would have gone after Mill well before five years had passed by, as she was only an hour away.

This author is also a very good writer, but Kade's inability to speak in full sentences drove me nuts. It felt very abrupt, at times. There was also several other dramatic things that were added to the story that felt a little rushed. Someone from Mill's past comes back and seems unwilling to let Mill move on with her life with Kade, and I think that there could have been more preparation for this, because what happened, as well as the tone of the book towards the end, were not what I was expecting. Overall, I think this is a good start to a series, but I would like to read more about what is happening with the couple in the present, as opposed to being told about what happened in the past and how it was like that now, in the present.

Excerpt:
“Amelia?”
After my squawk of surprise, I turn and see Brody Kelly walking across the street and I can’t help the huge smile that covers my face.
“Brody!” I holler and run to meet him, jumping up and throwing my arms around his neck for a hug as his encircle my waist and he spins me around.
“Thought that was you,” he says with a grin as he sets me back down.
“In the flesh,” I say with a smile as I look up at him, covering my eyes with my hand to block the sun. Brody was always such a cutie with his messy sandy brown hair, expressive hazel eyes and mischievous grin that always let you know he was up to no good. He’s around six-two, two-hundred pounds of rock solid muscle and I’d think he was hot if not for the fact that he’s like a little brother to me.
He walks over and whistles at my car. “Man, Mill, getting’ pretty fancy on us. Might wanna hide it in the garage tonight so no one steals the rims.” He grins down at me when I come up beside him and smack him in the arm. He looks around for a second and says, “Seriously, where’s Jeeves? Didn’t he drive you?”
“Shut it, Brody,” I reply with a giggle.
“Guess you’re doing pretty well for yourself then, huh?” he asks, a small frown forming on his face.
I purse my lips then respond, “Yes, I’m doing okay, I guess.” He looks at me out of the corner of his eye in a that was so an understatement kind of way since my car cost almost six figures. “Um, what’re you doing here? I mean, it’s like you just appeared out of the blue,” I say.
He takes me by the shoulders and turns me to face across the street. I look at Pettyman’s Lumberyard, but that’s when I notice it no longer says Pettyman’s on the front but Kelly & Family Lumber and Construction in its place.
“Y-you bought Pettyman’s?”
He nods with another grin then asks, “So how long you in town for?”
“Not sure. I’ve got two months’ vacation time I’m using so I came to finally check out the station,” I explain, turning back to face it, my smile falling away.
“Aw, Mill, I’m sorry. They were good people,” he replies. “I know Harley feels terrible about everything.”
Harley Sedgwick, the local heating and air technician, had inspected the heater in Papaw and Meemaw’s house for years, telling Papaw on his inspection five years ago (the winter after my wedding debacle) that it really needed to be replaced. Papaw had scoffed at him telling him there was at least a good five more years in it. The next year, Papaw had neglected to call Harley to come back out and take a look, and Harley had been so busy that it hadn’t even occurred to him to check on them. The heater had developed a leak since the previous year it’d been checked, and my beloved grandparents tragically died in their sleep from carbon monoxide poisoning on a chilly day in early November.
“I know,” I say. “I hope he knows it’s not his fault. Papaw was a stubborn old fool anyway, as Meemaw would’ve said.” I chuckle sadly.
He curls an arm around my shoulders to comfort me. The Kelly men and their protectiveness, I think which makes me sigh.
“So think you might be back to stay?” he asks looking down at me, eyebrows raised.
I huff out a laugh because that’s a ludicrous idea. “No. I wanted to see if maybe I could get the place up and running again then sell,” I inform him.
He drops his arm then nods with what looks like disappointment, which I think is ridiculous. He knows I’m never coming back.
“So how are you? How’s Piper?” I ask.
“She’s fine,” he says aloofly. Then he gets a shy look on his face. “I passed the fireman test. I’m a real-live firefighter now.”
My eyes now get big and I squeal, “Really? Oh, my God! I’m so happy for you!” I hug him again telling him his news is wonderful when I hear someone clearing his throat behind him. Still holding on to him, I lean to the side and look around his shoulder, and what I see makes me swallow down a gasp.
Dear God.
Brody’s older brother Kade Kelly.
Still hotter than hell Kade Kelly.
Kade Kelly who’s got a hard body that’s sculpted like a magnificent work of art.
Who has a large Celtic cross tattooed on his back with “Fiona” in the middle of it in honor of their baby sister who’d died at birth.
Kade Kelly who sings and plays guitar in a band.
Who took my virginity when I was sixteen and he was eighteen.
Kade Kelly who I left standing at the altar five years ago.

He scares the crap out of me.
He thrills me.
He used to tell me our love was bigger than the sky.
I always knew ours was a once-in-a-lifetime love. So how can he be so sure it can happen again?
I’m hearing that submarine warning horn in my ears. You know the one. It goes A-ooooo-ga! And that shit’s going off in my head over and over. I think it means the sub’s diving, as in, it’s going down. And that’s my warning right now because likely, I’m going down.
I clutch the sides of my dress and think, I can’t do this!
But that’s not how today’s supposed to go, is it?
What I’m supposed to do is go inside that church, take my bouquet (which is fabulous, by the way) from Cassie, my maid of honor, and walk down the aisle to my handsome fiancé who’s waiting for me in front of the altar.
But now I stand at the bottom of the church steps and suddenly can’t catch my breath. Papaw takes my hand and I smile at him weakly as he helps me up the first step and the horn suddenly stops.
Well. That’s weird. Maybe I can do this.
Second step. Hm. Better. Feeling Papaw’s hand in mine is comforting. All right. I think I’ve got this now. Piece of cake.
Third step. Oh, no. I start sweating. I can’t be sweating right now, damn it! It’s so unladylike! And I’ll get those crusty, yellowy stains on my dress from my armpits! Gross!
Fourth step. Shit! I can’t breathe. The panic has a grip on me and no matter what I do to try to calm myself and get it to let me go—closing my eyes, focusing on my breathing, picturing myself getting a full-body massage from some cute guy named Sven—it seems to dig its claws in tighter. Mayday!
On Deck. A-ooooo-ga! A-ooooo-ga! Ack! I’m going down! I gulp for air trying to fill my lungs but nothing helps. I look at Papaw but I guess my lack of air is making me hallucinate because it’s not him holding my hand and smiling at me but Viper from the movie Top Gun. What the hell?
Soooo I’m hoping you’ve noticed the Navy theme here? That’s because a Navy SEAL is waiting inside to marry me but all this stuff going on right now is messing with my head.
Let me give you the low down on the situation. Or is it the down low? Ugh. I’m so not hip. Wait. Do people still say hip anymore? God. See what living with grandparents does to a girl? I’m twenty-five and I talk like I’m twice my age. Jeez. But back to what I was trying to tell you.
My guy and I have been together since I was a sophomore and he was a senior in high school. But he’s now been enlisted in the Navy for nine years, most of it spent training to be then going on missions as a SEAL, and in all that time I’ve seen him maybe a total, a total, of a little over a year. In nine years! I’m not kidding. Since I’m a CPA I’ll figure that out for you. Out of nine years, he’s been gone almost ninety percent of the time. Can you see the face I’m making at that right now?
Anyway, now’s such a fantastic time to be figuring that out, huh?
I’m not a needy or clingy person. I mean, obviously, right? If I were, I would never have even considered marrying him, but now the alarms are going off in my head because suddenly I don’t know if I can do this. How can you make a life with someone when you only get to see them for just over one month out of the year? Like I said, I don’t have to have a man around all the time, but those statistics are just crazy.
I know you’re wondering why I even let it get this far without doing the math and here’s the answer: I don’t know! Thought you were gonna get a better answer, didn’t you? Well, if I don’t know it, I damned sure can’t tell it to you!
But maybe the answer is that I love him. I really do. Honestly. So now I’m thinking that maybe the idea of being married was what pushed me forward. Or maybe I just got caught up in planning it all—picking out the dress, the bouquet, all that fun stuff—and it kept me distracted for a while. But now that I’m here and about to walk through these doors and down the aisle to become his wife, with the numbers stacked so hugely against me, I don’t think I can.
I look up at Papaw and shake my head. He frowns in confusion but when he sees the tears in my eyes, he knows. He nods and lets my hand go. “Go to him, honey. Tell him.”
But I can’t. I can’t face him after all this.
And the only thing I know to do is run.
So that’s what I do.

Review of Finding Us (True Love #2) by Harper Bentley

Synopsis: Jag Jensen and Ellen Love had been best friends their whole lives until he turned thirteen and started noticing girls his own age, but that didn’t mean he stopped watching out for eleven-year-old Ellen. By his senior year in high school, baseball had taken the front seat in his life, with a scholarship to college and a pro career looming on the horizon, when sophomore Ellen caught his attention and they struck up their friendship again. Although Ellen wanted more, Jag didn’t want to drag her into what he knew would be a crazy life, but love has a way of deciding one’s future, and eventually they became a couple. Ellen followed him to California as he began his pro career, but his wild and hectic lifestyle screwed everything up.

Now Jag is lost, realizing he’s never been without his best friend in his life. Learning to live without Ellen doesn’t settle well with him, so while trying to remain at the top of his career, he also wants to get his girl back, which proves to be more difficult than he thought it’d be. Will Ellen give him another chance or does that sort of thing only happen in the sappy romance novels she always used to read? Jag hopes she’s willing to try again as he puts his heart on the line for the woman he knows will always be his forever and a day.

This is the second book of the True Love Trilogy

4 Stars

First of all, if you have not read the first book, please do not read this review, as it may contain spoilers. This book continues the story of Ellen and Jag from Discovering Us, however, it is from Jag's POV. I love a good guy POV, so I enjoyed this book. It starts off very similarly to the first book in that Jag describes how he has known "El" since they were kids, but he points out how he doesn't necessarily remember every date like she does - their first Popsicle together, for instance. I got a few chuckles out of this because I could sort-of hear my husband when I read statements like that. He does catch us up on the fact that he has always cared deeply about her, however. His story moves along from childhood to their teen years a little more quickly, though, which I did appreciate. I don't really like reading the exact same story from a different POV - I want more, which is what he gives. Jag does talk a lot more about his hesitancy to be with El, physically, and it really made me appreciate their relationship more because it reiterates that theirs is not an "insta-love" or just a relationship based on sex.

So, we basically get caught up to the present, which begins right after El leaves Jag when he tells her that they need a break. This, of course, happens after Jag attended an event for the commercials that he is shooting with lingerie model, Alessandra. At that event, Jag was basically told that he could not bring El with him and had to pretend to be with Alessandra, instead. This is after he had bought El this amazing dress and accessories and paid for her to get dolled up for the event. I think that every girl could feel her hurt and humiliation after that. We see from Jag's POV that he hated it as much as El, but he also sees it as something he has to do that should not effect his relationship with El. In his mind, he loves her, he wants to be with her, and she should stop being upset with him about it. After he storms off to cool down, however, and El leaves, he seems to begin to "get" it.

Thus begins Jag's time to try to figure out how to win El back. He begins to open up to several team mates and talk with them about their relationships and experiences, which is truly comical, and he begins to get ideas. El remains pretty steadfast at first, and with Jag's ball schedule, it takes some time for him to get back to Chicago to see her. He does finally get through to her, and they have a very steamy make-up session. As with the first book, we then have several chapters where we see how much El and Jag love and care about one another and their families. Jag finally sees that El had given up a lot for him to follow his dream, so he becomes more supportive of her dreams, even though it means more distance for them between Chicago and California. Nothing good ever lasts for long for these two, however. Alessandra is not finished trying to come between them, and Jag continues to be that guy that doesn't realize how devious women can be! I began to get a little frustrated with him at this point. I really wanted him to completely ignore her and his agent, Dirk, yet he does not.

This, sadly, leads us to the end of the book, which has these two at odds again. This time, however, El breaks up with Jag after getting some information that makes her very suspicious of Jag's actual relationship with Alessandra. Jag tries to talk with El but finally goes back home and begins another season of baseball. He hurts himself, causing El to contact him, but is Jag ready to take El back when she constantly shows him that she does not trust him? We don't know - another cliffhanger. Again, not my favorite tool for a book ending, but I will definitely be waiting for book three.

Review of Discovering Us (True Love #1) by Harper Bentley

Discovering Us (True Love, #1)
Synopsis: Ellen has loved Jagger since she was five and he was seven when they kissed through the chain link fence at school. She’s had their wedding planned since she was twelve and is ready for a happily ever after with him, but life just isn't that neat and tidy. Although they lost contact over the years, which broke her heart, during Jag's senior year in high school, sophomore Ellen catches his eye once again and their friendship is back on. When things between them gradually develop into something more, Ellen wants to give herself completely to Jag, but he’s not so sure he wants to risk their relationship in taking things to the next level. When Jag is drafted to the Dodgers as the hot, new pitcher of the team, Ellen decides to go with him, transferring colleges and leaving her friends and family behind. But things get more and more complicated when busy schedules, a slimy agent and a supermodel disrupt their lives, which makes Ellen question whether they’ll ever get their perfect forever.

This is the first book of the True Love Trilogy.

5 Angst-ridden Stars

So, I came across this book back in December and immediately wanted to read it. I read reviews, however, and figured out that it had a cliffhanger, so I decided to wait. I am actually not a big fan of cliffhangers. I love a good series because I love to spend time with the characters and really get to know them, but cliffhangers drive me crazy! This is the type of book that is right up my alley, though – childhood friends that develop into high school sweethearts who then have to learn to navigate early adulthood to see if their love will actually make it. Enter Ellen “El” and Jagger Knox Jensen, also known as “Jag”. These two have known each other since Ellen was five and Jag was seven. Ellen is the youngest of four, with three older brothers, so she grows up being a bit of a tomboy. She runs, swims, skateboards and spits alongside Jag for most of their life. However, around the age of 11, she realizes that she is beginning to have different feelings about Jag. He’s not just her buddy anymore; he is the boy that she will marry someday. He, however, being two years older, is also starting to see girls in a different light. The only problem is that he doesn’t see Ellen in that same light – she is still his little buddy, but he doesn’t really have time for her anymore since there are so many other girls that he can chase after. As they get older, he becomes more handsome and popular, and he begins to make a name for himself in baseball. Ellen decides to live with her secret crush and move on with life as she enters high school. They go for five years – five years! – without talking.

Life throws her another curveball (hey…I’m just going with the theme, here) when she is a Sophomore in high school and Jag is a Senior. He seems to finally see her again and wants to hang out with her. They begin as friends, with Ellen constantly getting flustered and ahead of herself. Example – she tries to tell him that something is super but also thinks of fun, so she tells him that it’s “fuper”. He just chuckles and moves on. He graduates and moves on to play baseball at college in a different state, but they continue seeing one another long distance. She then graduates and moves to college, as well, but they are still long distance. I want to point this out because this is actually something that I liked about Ellen. A lot of the female characters these days really seem to forget themselves or not take the time to figure out what they want. Ellen wants to work in Sports Medicine, and she finds a good program and pursues it at her choice of college, rather than following Jag. You go, Ellen! This does make for a difficult relationship, however, as their relationship grows more through phone conversations and text messages, which the author primarily just summarizes. Jag did always keep a physical distance between Ellen, however, that seemed to frustrate both of them, but this was addressed once he tasted a little bit of jealousy after seeing some pictures of her with a friend that also happened to be a boy. I also liked this part of the book because, as much as it might be fun to read at times – the dreaded insta-love and immediate physical connection – it is also refreshing to read about something that develops over time. Jag has spent most of his life caring for Ellen and protecting her, and he remains constant in that aspect and protects her from himself on an intimate level until they are both ready. When it happens, though, it is HOT.

This leads us into the next phase of Ellen and Jag’s story – the Big Leagues. Jag gets drafter to a Major League Team. Ellen is, as always, very supportive and excited, but she is still frustrated at the continued distance in their relationship. At this point, her family and friends really rally around both of them. Her friend Rebecca encourages her to wait through his first year and then move out with him when he is “called up” to the actual team – The LA Dodgers. This is what Ellen does – she works hard to get ahead in her program at school and makes sure that she finds a program that is also well known in her field and gets everything transferred. Even with this, Ellen thought about her decision and talked with Jag, her friends and her family about this. It didn’t come across as rash. She made a decision that her program and her boyfriend were both equally important at this point, and she wanted the ability to invest in both. So things move forward and seem really good. Jag’s schedule is crazy, as he has Spring Training for six weeks, then constant games – both in and out of town. Ellen, meanwhile, starts at her new school, gets involved in her classes and even gets a job. She doesn’t just live off of Jag – she actually wants to be his partner and do her part – again, something that I like. She hits the first snag, however, when she meets one of their neighbors – Allesandra. Allesandra is a lingerie model who makes snarky comments about Jag helping her with her car at some point before Ellen made it to California. This seems to be where the crack in their foundation begins – if not with the crazy schedules that they already have. Ellen does not care for Allesandra and her Brazilian beauty, and she lets Jag know. Several months go by, and things still seem to be okay on the surface, but then comes the commercial. This is the commercial heard ‘round the world for their relationship. Jag signs a contract to film a commercial with Allesandra, which happens on the beach, so you can imagine what that looks like. Jag knows that Ellen does not care for Allesandra, so he, in my opinion, really downplays what happened in filming the commercial. I think that this was one of his big mistakes, however, Ellen keeps convincing herself and her friends and family that it doesn’t bother her as much as it really does. This is one of her big mistakes.

Once the commercial airs, everything begins to unravel. Ellen has some, in my opinion, valid concerns about the commercial and what he did not share with her. He, however, does not seem to hear her. He basically just ignores her concerns and her hurt feelings, takes her to bed, and moves on. Then they find out that he has a continued commitment to filming additional commercials, as well as doing whatever the ad campaign asks of him. I don’t want to give too much away at this point, but this leads to the final chapter where Jag hurts Ellen on so many levels. First, he disregards how she feels about what is going on in their life. In reality, this is just the culmination of his having disregarded concerns that she has had for a while. He then breaks her heart – plain and simple. So, Ellen leaves and flies home, and that is where the first book ends. I waited until the second book was coming out to read this, and I am glad that I did. I would have been seriously pissed to get to that ending.

So, now that you’ve been introduced to Ellen and Jag, I will share one of my biggest complaints about this book - it is that it wasn’t long enough! Probably not a bad complaint to have, but I would have loved more stories of Ellen and Jag as they are growing up so that I really feel that I know them. As it is, I read this book so quickly and each chapter is just a snapshot of what they are going through. You go from Ellen being around age five in Chapter One to around age 23 by the end of the book, so it moves very quickly. I’ve pointed out several reasons why I love Ellen, though, so let me get to the good stuff. I love Jag. He is described as this amazingly attractive boy that gets better with age. Ellen talks about how manly he becomes, especially as he trains more and grows into being an actual adult. When I think of Jag, I think of that Aloe Blacc song “The Man”. It seems to fit Jag’s attitude and swagger. I really do believe that he loves Ellen, so I’m a little heartbroken right now, too. I’m not sure what happened with him, although, I always try to put a book into a real-life frame once I’ve finished reading it. I think that, between both of their schedules and his gaining notoriety as an athlete and a semi-celebrity, they are actually probably responding pretty realistically to outside pressure on their relationship. Does that make my heart any less for Ellen, though? No. Does that make Jag any less of an absolute jerk for not seeing what he has been doing to Ellen, not to mention the final straw? No. I can’t wait to read the second book. I have heard that it is from his point of view. I need to know what the crap is going on. Is it at all possible that he has let his new fame go to his head? I truly hope not.
